Karlsruhe, November 22, 2023 – The AI Comp (Artificial Intelligence Competences) competency model was developed by NextEducation as part of the two projects AI Campus and AI Campus Hub Baden-Württemberg. It is based on an empirical study in which over 1,600 professionals in Baden-Württemberg were surveyed about the skills requirements arising from the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the world of work and everyday life.
The acronym AIComp is formed from the words Artificial Intelligence Competences. It represents future AI skills that are important for a broad spectrum of individuals. Skills that are only useful in a specific profession are not considered here.
Below you will find downloads for the AI Comp model, the study results, and the data briefing.
AI Comp is currently the largest study on AI-related future skills. It is the result of intertwined qualitative and quantitative research steps. After a comprehensive analysis of existing research literature, an inventory consisting of 160 AI competency items was created. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the inventory was shortened, clustered, summarized, and thus reduced to a total of 13 competency fields. These were validated and refined in a qualitative interview study. As a result, the AI Comp model was reduced to 12 competency fields.
Based on the 12 areas of competence, a questionnaire for a quantitative online study was designed and further developed in pre-tests. In this questionnaire, each of the 12 areas of competence was surveyed with three items. The field phase of the study ran from June 15, 2023, to July 31, 2023, and was aimed at working people in Baden-Württemberg. The data from more than 1,600 participants allows for the empirical construction of a competency model based on the respondents' subjective assessments of their experiences, self-assessments, and attributions of meaning to the 12 competency areas
Background: The AI Campus is a learning platform for artificial intelligence offering free and freely accessible online courses, videos, and podcasts designed to strengthen AI and data skills. As an R&D project, the AI Campus is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and coordinated by the Stifterverband.
