Universities are at a turning point. Artificial intelligence is changing research, teaching, and professional practice at a pace that increasingly challenges traditional curriculum development cycles. At the same time, AI opens up previously unimagined opportunities to deepen scientific knowledge, develop creative solutions, and empower students to develop reflective, responsible, and future-oriented skills. In order for universities to actively shape this change, they need development processes that are flexible, evidence-based, and well-structured—and that can be implemented in a legally compliant and effective manner, even outside of accreditation cycles. This is precisely where agile program development comes in.
Agile curriculum development means no longer viewing curricula as static entities, but rather as learning structures that can be reviewed, refined, and adapted to current requirements step by step.
With these materials, we want to support universities in all disciplines in systematically integrating AI skills into their courses. At the heart of this is the AI Competence Model AIComp, which is based on a large empirical study involving over 1,600 professionals in Baden-Württemberg. It shows which future skills people need in order to remain capable of acting in an AI-dominated world. AIComp describes skills in three areas—professional, personal, and social—and divides them into a total of twelve skill areas. It thus serves as a framework for clearly structuring technical learning objectives, responsible usage practices, critical reflection, and ethical questions.
The rapid development of generative AI poses a challenge for universities: curricula must remain flexible, as traditional models are too slow to adapt. This video shows how universities are integrating AI skills and future skills directly into their degree programs based on the empirical AIComp model—in an iterative, practical, and future-proof manner.
